On Tuesday June 18th Türkiye face Georgia in what is both teams opening games of the European Championship tournament. From an outsiders perspective this seems like a dead rubber game as neither of these nations have any real chance of going far into the tournament however, to fans of both nations this is a historic game.
For Türkiye this game means a lot as a strong start to their Euros campaign will put them in a good place to escape the group and move onto the next round. This is something they haven’t managed to do since their historic campaign in 2008 where they managed to reach a semi-final in which they narrowly lost out to Germany with a 3-2 score on the night. Since then they’ve struggled to perform on the international stage which is why a victory tonight is essential if they want to break the trend of falling short in the group stage.
For Georgia this game means everything. Euro 2024 is the first time Georgia have EVER qualified for a competitive senior tournament and they will be looking to make their nation proud by making a mark in their first ever game at the European Championships. Despite many believing Georgia will be the whipping boys of their group and the fact they are a small nation with no prior experience in major competitions, the Georgian fans are hopeful their nation will do them proud and escape the group. If that is to be the case then a victory in this game is essential to set them up for what may turn out to be a not only historic but successful tournament for them.
It is evident that both teams are in desperate need of victory tonight which sets this game up to be a hard-fought and competitive affair and one that will not disappoint fans of any allegiance.
